The Spanish Language Program is available in all the summer sessions and is open to students of all levels from Beginner to Advanced. The program is designed to maximize students’ knowledge and communicative abilities in the Spanish language by providing instruction in grammar, vocabulary, speaking and listening practice and culture.

Language classes meet for 4 hours per day from Monday through Friday meeting for a total of 80 hours and 5 recommended credits per 4-week session.

Nine levels of Spanish are available. All courses are taught in Spanish.

Students taking the Spanish Language Program can also opt to take a Conversation Practice course at their level meeting 10 hours and a recommended 0.5 credits. A minimum of 10 students is required for this course to run.

Intermediate, Advanced and Superior level students can opt to take the Conversation Practice course or a subject course (taught in Spanish) from the Spanish Language and Culture Program. Elective classes meet for a total of 22.5 hours and a recommended 1.5 credits.

You can combine consecutive sessions for a longer stay and to earn more credit.

You can also combine the May Term Spanish Language Program with Spanish Language Session 1 or Sessions 1 + 2.

Open to students with Intermediate, Advanced and Superior levels of Spanish interested in furthering their Spanish language and taking specific courses related to Spanish history and culture. All courses are taught in Spanish. Courses meet for 45 (3 credits) or 22.5 hours (1.5 credits).

A Spanish language course is not mandatory on this program; however, it is highly recommended in order to get the most out of the academic program and studying abroad in Spain.

Students can earn up to 6 recommended credits per 4-week session taking courses in one of the following combinations:

  • Spanish language (45 hours) + one 45-hour subject course
  • Spanish language (45 hours) + two 22.5-hour subject courses
  • One 45-hour subject course + two 22.5-hour subject courses
  • Two 45-hour subject courses
  • Four 22.5-hour subject courses

Combine consecutive sessions for more credit.

You can also combine the May Term Spanish Language Program with Spanish Language and Culture Session 1 or Sessions 1 + 2.

The Internship Program gives students with an intermediate level of Spanish and above the opportunity to intern in a local business, in a local hospital or with an NGO. Students combine the 3-credit internship (business or medical) or the 1.5-credit internship (NGO) with courses from the Spanish Language and Culture program for up to 6 credits per session. Students complete an internship application in addition to the program application. Spanish level is determined by a placement test regardless of previous experience. We advise you to gain prior approval for several course options in order to ensure you will receive credit in the event that you do not place into the required level of Spanish for the internship.

This course is available to students with an Upper Advanced level of Spanish who place into Spanish 304/403/404 Upper Advanced B2.2 level or above. Most internships are based in hotels in Granada giving students experience and insight into the tourism and hospitality industry and business practice in Spain.

Students undertaking the medical internship will work in a private hospital shadowing and working with healthcare professionals. Students must place into Spanish 304/403/404 Upper Advanced B2.2 level or above and be studying relevant (major or minor) health courses as part of their degree program.

Students wishing to intern in an NGO must place into Spanish 203, Intermediate B1.1 level or above.

Students must attend interviews with suitable organizations as part of the internship selection process. Final selection is always at the discretion of the organization and the University of Granada Internship Coordinator.

History

Before this ancient city was conquered by the Catholic Monarchs in 1492, it was ruled by the Moors, during their nearly 800-year domination of the Iberian Peninsula. Granada has 3 listed UNESCO Heritage Sites: the Alhambra, Generalife Gardens, and the residential district of Albayzín.

Sports

Situated about 18 miles (30km) away from the Sierra Nevada’s, Granada is the perfect spot for a ski getaway in the sun. The Sierra Nevada has snowcapped peaks from November to May and over 250 sunshine days a year.

Geography

Granada’s location is ideal. You can hike the Sierra Nevada in the morning, take a dip in the Mediterranean in the afternoon and enjoy tapas by the light of the Alhambra in the evening.

AIFS in Granada Director, Semester Programs

Noelia Marin Muñoz

¡Hola! I have been working with visiting students in Granada since 2007. I studied at the university myself so am very familiar with student life here in Granada. I also spent a year studying abroad in England which gave me an understanding of how to adjust to living in a different culture. My job is to help facilitate your immersion into the Spanish language and culture; ensuring your study abroad is a fun and safe learning experience. I love watching how students change during their time here. Upon arrival, you will continually ask questions. By the end of the program you will be independent, confident and knowledgeable citizens of the world and teaching me things I didn’t know! The AIFS office is located in “Puerta Real”, the very center of Granada. It is a 5-minute walk from the university building. Drop by and tell me about something wonderful you have discovered in my favorite city!

The Program Director provides academic advice, introduces you to the community and handles communication with the University.

Learning does not begin or end in the classroom. To help you get a true taste of Spanish culture, a wide range of cultural activities and excursions are included in your program fee. The Program Director organizes a variety of activities which may include:

  • Welcome party
  • Granada’s Islamic Heritage: guided tour of the Albaicin, the city’s historic Arabic quarter
  • Tour of the Cathedral and Royal Chapel

  • Walks to Sacromonte district
  • Horseback riding in the countryside
  • Arabic baths
  • Hiking in the Sierra Nevada mountains
  • Spanish movie night
  • Tapas with Spanish students
  • Farewell party with Flamenco Show and tapas

Please note that students may need to pay an additional fee for some of the activities above.

Social identity & access

One of the best things you can do before departure is enter into the journey knowing that your time abroad will be unique to this experience. The resources, community, and support available to you when abroad will likely be different as well. In order to help you prepare for your experience, we have compiled many resources about social identity and access in specific locations abroad.
