Grant Opportunities

We are committed to Access, Inclusion, Diversity & Equity. So, we have converted several scholarships into automatically awarded grants to eligible students as part of the application process; students do not need to complete a separate scholarship application. As an applicant to one of our programs, you will know immediately which grants you are eligible or may be eligible to receive. Over 50% of our students receive financial support in the form of grants!

Students may receive multiple grants they are eligible for, up to a maximum of $2,500 for a semester study abroad program or $1,500 for a summer, J-term, or internship program.

AIFS Abroad will award a $500 grant for students attending a Minority Serving Institution.

MSIs are institutions of higher education that serve minority populations. They are unique both in their missions and in their day-to-day operations. Some of these colleges and universities are located in remote regions of the country, whereas others serve urban neighborhoods. Some are only a few decades old, whereas others, have been striving for more than a century to give their constituents the social and educational skills needed to overcome racial discrimination and limited economic opportunities.

AIFS Abroad will award a $500 grant for students attending a Historically Black College or University.

There are 91 four-year and 17 two-year institutions of higher education established prior to 1964 for the primary purpose of educating African-Americans. The majority of the 102 HBCUs are located in the Southeastern states, the District of Columbia, and the Virgin Islands. HBCUs comprise 3% of America’s institutions of higher education, yet enroll 16% of all African-American students in higher education and award 24% of all baccalaureate degrees earned by African-Americans nationwide.

AIFS Abroad will award an additional $500 to each student who receives a Pell Grant and uses it toward any AIFS catalog program.

Federal Pell Grants are awarded only to undergraduate students who display exceptional financial need and have not earned a bachelor’s, graduate, or professional degree.

Social identity & access

One of the best things you can do before departure is enter into the journey knowing that your time abroad will be unique to this experience. The resources, community, and support available to you when abroad will likely be different as well. In order to help you prepare for your experience, we have compiled many resources about social identity and access in specific locations abroad. Your program staff will also provide you with more details pre-departure and during orientation.
