Salzburg is a city in central Austria, at the northern edge of the Alps. It has a population of approximately 150,000 people, which makes it the fourth-biggest city of Austria.
Home to Mozart and the Sound of Music, Salzburg is one of the most renowned and inspiring cities in Europe.
Salzburg has one of the best-preserved old town centre full of beautiful baroque architecture which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also home to Europe’s oldest restaurant, St. Peter Stiftskeller which was founded in 803 CE.
Guten Tag! Not sure what that means yet? Don’t worry, during your semester, you will pick up much more than “hello”. After being with AIFS since 1987 I am certain of that!
I am of German-American descent, and was born and raised in Indiana. Every year my family and I would visit Germany, Austria, Switzerland and France, which prompted me to study abroad on this very AIFS program.
During my time as a student, I learned a great deal about Austrians, Austrian culture and the language. I was so taken with this beautiful city that I returned to live here.
While you are in Austria I will be working hard to ensure all aspects of the program run smoothly and am always happy to give advice on how to get the most out of your time abroad.
The Program Director provides academic advice, introduces you to the community and handles communication with the University.
Learning does not begin or end in the classroom. To help you get a true taste of Austrian culture, various activities will be organized such as:
Salzburg is the ideal place to pursue an interest in music. You can learn an instrument or deepen your appreciation of an instrument that you play already. AIFS can help arrange lessons with a private tutor. Students are responsible for paying any fees directly to the tutor.
Open
Students can select an optional transportation package for all AIFS programs. Students who choose to book their own flights should meet up with group at the program location and will need to make their own ground transportation arrangements.
Below are fees by departure city based on average historical costs and subject to change. If you select this option on your application, the total flight package price will be confirmed in your account 6 months prior to departure. (Program fee is guaranteed.)

Social identity & access
One of the best things you can do before departure is enter into the journey knowing that your time abroad will be unique to this experience. The resources, community, and support available to you when abroad will likely be different as well. In order to help you prepare for your experience, we have compiled many resources about social identity and access in specific locations abroad. Your program staff will also provide you with more details pre-departure and during orientation.
