AIFS in Milan Director, January Term Program

Amanda Vojvodin

Amanda is a Canadian who first moved to Europe in 2012 to study in Grenoble, France. There she was selected to be an ambassador to Canada as part of the Rhone-Alpes Jeunes Ambassadeurs program. She continued her studies in Milan at Cattolica University before deciding to move there permanently following the completion of her master’s thesis at SDA Bocconi University in 2015.

Amanda loves sharing her firsthand experiences as an expat living in Italy through her Instagram and YouTube Channels, La Vita è Style. She recently became a Mom to Leonardo and loves spending time with him and her husband Michelangelo, exploring Milan and discovering new things in Italy. They split their time between Milan and Canada and spend their summers in Puglia – a part of Italy that’s close to their heart. Amanda has been keen on sharing her love for all things arts, culture and history with new people since having the privilege to be one of the 40 Canadians selected to work as a tour guide at the Parliament of Canada from 2010 to 2014. She currently works as a marketing and events manager in the fashion industry in Milan and joined the AIFS team in 2022. She is excited to share her love for Milan with future students and to ensure they live an authentic Milanese experience!

AIFS in Florence Director, Summer Program

Simona Michelotti

Laurea cum laude in Pedagogy at the University of Florence

Simona was born in Malta, but very soon moved to Italy. She is used to say that her heart is divided between her love for Florence and the one for South Tyrol. She loves to every day walk through the Ponte Vecchio admiring the beauty of Florence, but she cannot stay too much far away from the breathtaking Dolomites mountains, where she hikes or snowshoes according to the season. She is also a wine lover and loves to cook for her friends and family, as a typical Italian!

Very soon she understood the importance of Study Abroad, when during high school, she spent a summer at a college in Florida: a meaningful experience that somehow directed all her future choices.

Simona has been working full time for AIFS since 1998, covering different roles, such as Director of the Internship and Service Learning Program, Director of the Summer School, and she also ran a J-Term program on the Dolomites. She is now the Dean of the Florence Program, although she refers to herself as an Educator who has the honor to prepare the ground field for unforgettable learning experiences and change the students’ lives forever, exactly like it happened to her.

The Program Director provides academic advice, introduces you to the community and handles communication with the University.

Learning does not begin or end in the classroom. To help you get a true taste of Italian culture, the Program Director arranges activities and excursions.

Many activities promote a way of learning through “hands-on” experience as well as integration with the local community to allow students to get the most from life in Florence. Most events are included in the program fee and only a few require a small supplementary fee. Examples of activities are:

  • Pizza school
  • Italian cooking classes
  • Food and wine pairing
  • Gelato tasting tour discovering the best “gelaterie” in town
  • Main museums (such as Opera del Duomo, Uffizi and Galleria dell’Accademia)
  • Guided tour of the African portraits at the Uffizi Gallery
  • Concerts, operas and ballets at the theater
  • Backstage at the famous Pitti Immagine Uomo fashion show
  • Oxfam Migrantour
  • Art and craft workshops
  • Workshops at the Urban Gardens
  • Dinners and events with Italians
  • “Spaghetti Connection” program (to give students the opportunity to gather round the table with Italian families)
  • Language exchange with local students
  • Yoga gatherings
  • AIFS soccer team
  • Basketball matches with local students

Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore

Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, also known as UCSC or UNICATT was founded in 1921, with an ethos of service to the community, and promoting the personal development of its students. It’s the most important Catholic University in Europe, and with five campus locations it is the largest European private university. The main campus is located in central Milan, near the Cathedral (known as the Duomo) and is set in a 16th Century monastery designed by Bramane.

It has a large international student population of over 3000, and strong ties to the global business community. In the span of 100 years it has educated politicians, journalists, businesspeople, cardinals, and fashion models, and in the QS World University Rankings by subject 2022 had 16 disciplines ranked on the top 300 in the world, or higher.

As well as an excellent academic reputation its large study body leads to campus diversity and the opportunity for all students to find their own space where they can excel.

Amanda is a Canadian who first moved to Europe in 2012 to study in Grenoble, France. There she was selected to be an ambassador to Canada as part of the Rhone-Alpes Jeunes Ambassadeurs program.

Every apartment comes with its own sets of dishware, cooking supplies, beddings. Cleaning service comes biweekly.

History

Rome is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe. The city is also home to the Vatican City which is not a city at all, but its own independent country right in the heart of Rome.

Population

Rome, with its population of over 4,000,000, is the capital of Italy and the fourth most populous city in the European Union. The charming eclectic culture of modern Rome is a result of diverse cultures and people who have made this city their home for years. Rome is a modern city that thrives in its cosmopolitan culture but still has a deep reverence to its past.

AIFS in Rome Director, Summer Program

Rosanna Graziani
M.A. in Modern Languages from the University of Florence

Ciao! I grew up in a beautiful medieval town in central Italy, immersed in nature.

I earned my degree in Florence, where I joined AIFS in 1995 as a teacher of Italian L2.

When I moved to Rome in 2001, I immediately felt spellbound to the beauty, the wealth of art and history, the colors, the energy, and the climate of this extraordinary city.

I am passionate about international education and travelling; as a study abroad student myself, and through the many countries I visited, I learned how empowering and transformational learning about different people and cultures can be.

I am committed to providing a study abroad program of intensive engagement with Rome and Italy and I will support and advise you throughout your stay to ensure that you make the most of your Italian experience.

The Program Director provides academic advice, introduces you to the community and handles communication with the University.

Learning does not begin or end in the classroom. To help you get a true taste of Italian culture, a wealth of cultural activities and excursions are included in your program fee such as cooking and wine tasting classes and visits to some of the most famous museums, churches and palaces in and around Rome with professional art historians. Italian students from the University of Rome intern throughout the program as language and cultural peer mentors, participating in most program arranged curricular and extracurricular activities.

Past activities have included:

  • Opera nights in the beautiful setting of Caracalla archaeological site
  • Cooking and pasta classes
  • Wine tastings
  • Pizza tastings
  • Gelato tastings
  • Visit to the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum and the Roman Forum
  • Cinema nights on Tiber Island
  • Get togethers and dinners with Italian students
  • Art and discovery tours
  • Lectures and workshops
  • Various exhibitions and concerts (jazz, rock, blues)
  • Botanical Gardens
  • Day trips around Rome (including the beach, Bracciano lake and hiking)
  • “Underground” Rome
  • Ballets/Musicals
  • Handicraft market
  • Food markets
  • Visit to the zoo
  • Group dinners
  • Farewell dinner

Please note that students may pay a small additional fee for some of the activities above.

In addition, a Language Peer Mentoring Program as well as a conversation exchange program with Italian college students is available for all students.

Excursions

Explore further afield and deepen your social, historical and cultural understanding of Italy. Previous excursions have included:

Assisi, Italy.

Perugia, Assisi and the Umbria Region

Explore Italy’s green heart beyond the big cities. Visit Assisi, worldwide known as a beautiful example of medieval architecture. Admire Giotto’s frescoes in the beautiful basilica and continue to Montefalco for a wine and oil tasting in a local farm. Overnight in Perugia, where you’ll stroll past top sights like Palazzo dei Priori, Rocca Paolina, Piazza IV Novembre, and the Roman aqueduct. Trip includes round-trip transportation, accommodation with breakfast, entrance, guided sightseeing with art professor.

LCI Barcelona attracts talent from all over the world. The overall goal is to provide quality teaching and empower the student to seek and build their talent and creativity.

LCI Barcelona offers a panoramic and integral vision of the creative world: fashion, graphic design, interior design, industrial product design, photography, Spanish society, communications, and management of innovative companies. Most courses are taught in English. Students are not required to take a Spanish language course, although we highly recommend it in order to benefit more roundly from the experience of living in Spain.

Students will learn trends and creative skills to enhance their resumes and help them engage in new social, cultural, and economic contexts regarding the relationship between the people and their spaces. Studying Spanish as a Second Language, should the student choose to do so, also provides access to business opportunities with 20 countries worldwide, and with the large Spanish-speaking population in the U.S.

LCI understands that there are many dimensions to your international experience, and acquiring skills in your disciplinary interest can be challenging in another language. LCI therefore offers English-taught offerings so you can experience the local culture and grow in your interests. Some courses are available in Spanish. Students wishing to take courses taught in Spanish should have a minimum level determined by a placement test.

Each course is 3 or 4 credits. The program fee includes up to 14 credits. Students wishing to take more credits can do so for an additional fee. There are many different options for combining courses, e.g.:

  • 1 x Spanish course (4 credits) and 3 (3 credit) electives for a total of 13 credits
  • 1 x Spanish course (4 credits), 2 (3 credit) elective and 1 (4 credit) elective for a total of 14 credits
  • 1 x Spanish course (4 credits) and 3 (4 credit) electives for a total of 16 credits
  • 2 x Spanish course (4 credits each) and 2 (4 credit) electives for a total of 16 credits
  • 4 (3 credit) electives for a total of 12 credits
  • 3 (4 credit) electives for a total of 12 credits
  • 2 (3 credit) electives and 2 (4 credit) electives for a total of 14 credits

All students enrolling in Spanish courses are required to take an online placement test and oral interview prior to arrival.

Students should consult with their university advisors in the U.S. prior to participating in the program to have course credit pre-approved and ensure that they are taking the appropriate amount of credits.

AIFS in Barcelona Director, Academic Year and Semester Programs

Maya Edwards

¡Hola! Greetings from beautiful Barcelona, a city I love to call “home.” Having lived in many cities in Spain, I’ll be a great resource for you while you’re here in Barcelona. An educator and study abroad professional, I’ve been working with students both in Spain and in the U.S. for over 15 years. I earned a B.A. in Spanish and Communications, an M.A. in Spanish, and am completing a Ph.D. in Spanish Literature and Cultural Studies. I love working with students and am happy to help you navigate your own journey in Spain, Barcelona and beyond: broadening academic and personal horizons, making the most of your time in this amazing place.

My favorite aspect of being Program Director is spending time with students and seeing how much they grow after their study abroad experience in Spain. The AIFS Barcelona team is always eager to offer our guidance and support, as well as share ideas on how to make the most out of your stay. Barcelona is a beautiful and fascinating city; perfect for a study abroad program, not just because of its proximity to the beach!

The Program Director provides academic advice, introduces you to the community and handles communication with the University.

In addition to day trips and excursions, a cultural calendar of weekly activities and social events is included in your program fee. These activities will include both typical tourist sites and attractions and lesser known visits which take advantage of the expert knowledge of our local AIFS staff and give you a more authentic and insightful view of Spanish life. Typical activities, tours and visits include:

  • Guided city tour
  • Welcome meal and farewell activity
  • Gothic Quarter and Cathedral
  • Gaudí’s Park Güell
  • The Sagrada Família Basílica
  • Cooking class
  • Tours and workshops designed to learn about Barcelona from another perspective
  • Wellness events and more!

You may be asked to pay a small supplementary fee for some events.

Volunteer opportunities are available through a local NGO to provide services to people in need within the local community.
