Overview

Edinburgh is known for being one of the most beautiful cities in the world with its historic attractions, UNESCO World Heritage sites, and rich history. It is set among towering hills, gardens and parks, and archaic buildings – many from the middle ages. The city hosts an entire season of various festivals throughout the summer and early fall, and supports several theatres and production companies year-round.

The capital city and business hub of Scotland, Edinburgh has the strongest economy of any city in the United Kingdom outside London. This ensures a plentiful, wide range of internship opportunities in Business, Marketing, Tech and IT, but also Tourism, Museums, History, Engineering, and so much more.

Internships in Edinburgh, Scotland are ideal for participants who want an English speaking placement and a small city feel!

Internship Opportunities

AIFS Abroad offers a unique global educational experience for students on this program, with the following academic options available:

The Global Experiences Enrollment Team reviews application materials, which are a combination of relevant work experience, college or university level course work, and an assessment of maturity and readiness for working in a professional setting. After a participant has been accepted, we guarantee an internship placement.

Our team works with applicants 1:1 to gain a better understanding of the skills they will bring to their team, talents they want to grow, and expectations they have of their experience. By working individually with each intern we can assess academic knowledge, career goals, language proficiency, and overall expectations for your time in Edinburgh, in order to place you in a dynamic work environment.

Once a match is found, all interns will interview by phone or Zoom with their manager before the placement is offered and confirmed. When you arrive in Edinburgh, Location Coordinators will be there to help you start your internship and support you with on-site checkins and coaching to make the most of your internship placement.

Geography

Edinburgh is one of the most beautiful cities in the United Kingdom. It is set among towering hills and the city is set among parks and ancient buildings – many from the middle ages.

History

Scotland was united with England through the Act of Union in 1707 following years of conflict. Until 1999 Scotland was ruled directly from London but following the Scotland Act in 1998 Scotland now has its own parliament and is responsible for making most of its own laws. Edinburgh, as the capital city is at the heart of a dynamic period in Scottish history in which the country re-establishes its own identity and is developing progressive social measures modelling on their northern European neighbours.

Jenni is the Edinburgh Location Coordinator at Global Experiences. Born and raised in Scotland’s capital city, Jenni loves seeing how excited the interns are when they first arrive. She understands that excitement as she is an Alumni of the Global Experiences Florence program!

Outside of her role with GE, Jenni loves to travel to cities on her bucket list. She also spends some time buying and selling vintage clothes on Etsy, so we’re confident she knows all of the great shopping spots around Edinburgh!

In addition to day trips and excursions, a cultural calendar of weekly activities and social events is included in your program fee. These activities will include both typical tourist sites and attractions and lesser known visits which take advantage of the expert knowledge of our local AIFS Abroad staff and give you a more authentic and insightful view of life in England. Typical activities, tours and visits include:

  • Hogwarts-Inspired Potion Making at a Local Pub
  • Stirling Castle & Wallace Monument
  • Crazy Golf (golf, dinner, and 2 drink package)
  • Guided Haunted Ghost Tour
  • Axe Throwing at a Local Venue
