Overview

Spend a summer in the captivating city of Lisbon, Portugal, with AIFS! Study a variety of academic program options at the Instituto Universitario de Lisboa (ISCTE) International Business School. Located in the lively city center, the business school holds both the prestigious AACSB and AMBA business accreditations.

Academics

AIFS Abroad offers a unique global educational experience for students on this program, with the following academic options available:

Currently 3,500 students are enrolled in the undergraduate, masters, and PhD programs offered by the school’s six departments. As well as being recognized worldwide for its teaching and research, the IBS is well known for its multicultural and international approach to education. The school also holds the prestigious AACSB and AMBA business accreditations.

AIFS recommends that students take one course per session for 3 credits. It may be possible to take an additional course for 3 credits for an additional fee. This will also depend on the course schedule which is intensive and may not allow time for the second course. Students requiring 6 credits are instead recommended to take two sessions rather than one. 

Classes are held for 3 hours a day, Monday through Friday for a total of 45 hours. No AIFS participant is permitted to take a course without receiving a grade. Pass/Fail grade options are not available. 

Portuguese History and Culture & Survival Portuguese Language – available for all students 

In addition to the business courses all students can take survival Portuguese language and Portuguese History and Culture. These courses really help students make the most of their time in Lisbon and to better understand the city and country where they are living.

Living Abroad

Student Residence

Live with other AIFS students in residence halls located near the university or a short bus ride away. The student residence includes:

  • Single or double bedrooms
  • Kitchen and dining room
  • Study room
  • Self-service laundry facilities

Internet access is included in all AIFS housing in Lisbon

Geography

Lisbon is famous for its sunny weather, colorful buildings, Fado music, and friendly locals. It is one of the oldest cities in Europe, dating back to 205 BC. It was built on top of 8 hills and a Roman city.

Architecture

Beautiful architecture is abundant with it’s black and white, patterned stones also known as Portuguese pavement, adorning the sidewalks and public squares all over the city. Lisbon is home to one UNESCO site, the Tower of Belém which was constructed in 1502.

Cuisine

Lisbon is home to one of the world’s most top secret recipes, the Pastéis da nata, a sweet creamy desert with a flaky crust adorned by locals and tourists alike.

AIFS Program Director

A dedicated AIFS Program Director will be on-site throughout your program providing guidance, support and information on all aspects of the program. Details and contact information will be available prior to the start of the summer program.

The Program Director provides academic advice, introduces you to the community and handles communication with the University.

Learning does not begin or end in the classroom. To help you get a true taste of Portuguese culture, a wide range of cultural activities and excursions are included in your program fee. Activities and events may include:

  • Guided city tour
  • Visit to Sintra
  • Tour of the famous Lisbon market
  • Fado evening

Please note that students may need to pay a small additional fee for some of the activities above.

Public transportation is very convenient in Lisbon. You will receive a transportation pass to ride the metro, buses and iconic trams. 

Excursions

This program offers a range of day trips and excursions that will take you outside Lisbon and deepen your social, historical and cultural understanding of Portugal. Previous excursions have included:

Social identity & access

One of the best things you can do before departure is enter into the journey knowing that your time abroad will be unique to this experience. The resources, community, and support available to you when abroad will likely be different as well. In order to help you prepare for your experience, we have compiled many resources about social identity and access in specific locations abroad. Your program staff will also provide you with more details pre-departure and during orientation.

Optional Flight Package

Students can select an optional transportation package for all AIFS programs. Students who choose to book their own flights should meet up with group at the program location and will need to make their own ground transportation arrangements.
