Study Abroad | Buenos Aires

The course is designed for students who wish to improve their Spanish language within a short period. Three different language levels are available: Intermediate 1, Intermediate 2 and Advanced. Placement will be determined by an online placement test prior to the start of the program.

Three sessions of four weeks each are available. Students can enroll in a single session or in two or three consecutive sessions.

The Spanish course will merge the organic language learning that takes place in the homestay with methodology in the classroom. Both in the classroom and beyond you will be fully immersed in the culture enabling you to develop your communication skills and foster global perspectives and relationships through interaction with the people and culture of Argentina.

In order to ensure that you receive credit for the level that you are placed into, we recommend that you have courses at several levels pre-approved by your academic advisor at your home school prior to registration. Most foreign institutions have higher standards for assessing language levels of students than you might expect in a U.S. institution.

Courses typically meet Monday through Thursday for 5 hours per day for 4 weeks plus on two out of four Fridays therefore each session meets for a total of 90 hours.

Each session is recommended for 6 semester credits. Students who stay for more than one session should advance a level of Spanish in the next session if they successfully complete the course requirements of the session that they are in.

The Argentine and Latin American Studies Program offers a five-week summer term consisting of two upper division survey courses in Latin American Studies at the 300 level taught in Spanish, or two upper division survey courses in business at the 300 level taught in English. Students choosing the option taught in Spanish will need a minimum of Intermediate level to participate. 

Each course meets four times per week for a total of 60 hours and is therefore recommended for 4 semester credits for a total of 8 credits. Students opting to take Session 1 Intensive Language beforehand can earn up to 14 semester credits. 

The program is designed for students who already have basic communication skills in Spanish. The aim is to increase the student’s knowledge about the process of learning and teaching second languages. Classes emphasize the acquisition of Spanish as a second language and in the Teaching Assistantship course students practice teaching English as a second language. 

The program provides a unique opportunity for bilingual Education students to come into contact with second language acquisition processes both in English and Spanish while experiencing the native culture of porteños. This experience will not only enhance your résumé, but also give you an advantage when applying for a teaching job. The program combines a TAship in a bilingual elementary school in Buenos Aires with a course in teaching Spanish as Second Language. This combination of theoretical instruction and practical experience will enable an increased understanding of both second language acquisition and teaching methodology. 

Through participation in this program, students earn a total of 8 U.S. semester credits. To be eligible, candidates must already have an Intermediate level of Spanish, will take a written placement test online and do an oral interview. 

This program is intended for students who already have basic communication skills in Spanish. The general aim of the course is to extend students’ ability to communicate on a wider range of topics in a medical setting. Classes emphasize the active acquisition of grammatical structures and vocabulary. 

The 60 hours of clinical rotation take place in the morning at FLENI (Foundation for the Fight against Childhood Neurological Diseases). The language course is a total of 60 hours, 45 in class and 15 during the rotation, for a recommended 4 semester credits. Due to the intensive nature of the clinical rotation and the additional hours at the hospital the overall program is recommended for a total of 6 semester credits.
