Overview

Spend a semester or academic year in the political, financial and cultural center of London, England, with AIFS! Take a variety of course options at University of Westminster with local and international students in one of the world’s great cities. Accommodations and courses are across Central London, a great way to get to know London and explore all it has to offer.

All full year students are required to obtain a student visa before departure. Once your final payment is received, AIFS will provide instructions to help you secure the visa. Due to the time this takes, we advise you to apply early.

AIFS Abroad offers a unique global educational experience for students on this program, with the following academic options available:

University of Westminster (UW) started out over 180 years ago established to educate the working people of London. It comprises of three colleges over four campuses in London with its main campus on Regent Street; College of Design, Creative and Digital Industries, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Westminster Business School. You would be joining a supportive and diverse international university with over 20,000 students from more than 169 nationalities and a strong commitment to wellbeing and inclusion. Students can select from a wide range of courses across different academic areas including
Liberal Arts & Social Sciences, Business, Media Arts & Design, Life Sciences, Architecture & Cites or Computer Science.

FASHION MODULES
There are a limited number of places for study abroad students, who are majoring in Fashion at their home institution, on theory modules from the Fashion Business Management degree program. More information is available from the AIFS Program Manager.

Living Abroad

AIFS students can apply for UW accommodation with options in Central London and at the Harrow Campus. Rooms are:

  • Single occupancy
  • Self-catered with a shared kitchen
  • Shared or private bathroom depending on residence

Internet access is included in all AIFS housing in London

Population

London has a diverse range of peoples and cultures, and more than 300 languages are spoken within its boundaries. London had topped 9 million people in 2020.  

Culture

London is home to numerous museums, galleries, libraries, sporting events and other cultural institutions, including the British Museum, National Gallery, Tate Modern, British Library and 40 West End theaters.

Transportation

London’s transportation system is also renowned, and the London Underground is the oldest underground railway network in the world.

Chris Shia

Chris has several years’ worth of experience in international education and support. Before joining AIFS, Chris worked in student resident life for many years. Growing up in Ealing, West London, Chris has studied abroad on an exchange to the University of North Texas and lived abroad in Toronto, Canada. Chris holds an undergraduate degree in Economics from the University of Surrey and a Masters in Urban Planning from University College London. Traveling around the world is something that Chris really enjoys, and Chris has been to over 36 countries around the world ranging from Bosnia to Japan. You can find Chris exploring and learning about different neighborhoods in London on the weekend and is always on the lookout for “hidden gems” that few people know about including local restaurants, markets, nightlife and experiences. Chris’s big passion is watching football and Chris supports the mighty Tottenham Hotspur and attends matches whenever possible. Feel free to contact Chris about a variety of things including things to see and do in London and the UK, housing, healthcare, traveling, saving money and much more.

The Program Director provides academic advice, introduces you to the community and handles communication with the University.

AIFS staff arrange a rich variety of activities to introduce students to life in the United Kingdom. There is an additional fee for many of these activities, but they offer an inexpensive way to experience London’s exciting cultural life and to see other parts of Britain. Professional guides escort trips to enhance the educational experience. Past events have included:

  • Black London, Rock Music, Street Art and Royal London walking tours
  • Rugby and soccer matches
  • Day trips such as Bath, Stratford-upon-Avon and Brighton
  • River boat cruise along the Thames
  • Theater performances
  • •Traditional afternoon tea

You may be asked to pay a small additional fee for some of the activities above.

Besides arranged activities, there is always a wide range of events taking place in and around London, concerts, theater in the parks and much, much more. Information on these events will be made available to students upon arrival in London.

At the University of Westminster students have access to 24-hour libraries, state-of-the-art science laboratories, advanced IT services, online learning resources, art, design, film and TV studios, world-class audio recording studios, galleries, sports and recreational facilities, as well as one of the few Bloomberg Financial Markets Suites in the UK.

Their dedicated architecture, art and design spaces include specialist workshops for wood, metal, molding, casting, photography and ceramics, and a new cutting-edge digital Fabrication Laboratory that offers a suite of 3D printers and laser cutters.

The University of Westminster Student Union also offer a range of clubs and societies for students giving the chance to follow your interests, try out new hobbies and meet local students. Student can also access on campus gym facilities.

Excursions

This program offers a range of day trips and excursions that will take you outside London and deepen your social, historical and cultural understanding of the UK.

Stonehenge and Salisbury

Take a guided tour of the 5,000 year old ancient stones of Stonehenge and visit nearby Salisbury, dominated by its spectacular cathedral. Includes round-trip transportation and entrance fees.

Cambridge

Take a guided tour of Cambridge, a city with beautiful architecture and a rich intellectual history. Includes round-trip transportation and entrance fees.

Cotswolds Villages

The Cotswolds is well-known for gentle hillsides (‘wolds’), crystal clear streams, sleepy villages and for being so ‘typically English’. The countryside is dotted with villages, hamlets, and small towns with buildings made from local, unique, honey-coloured stone. This day trip includes round trip transportation and applicable entrance fees.

Social identity & access

One of the best things you can do before departure is enter into the journey knowing that your time abroad will be unique to this experience. The resources, community, and support available to you when abroad will likely be different as well. In order to help you prepare for your experience, we have compiled many resources about social identity and access in specific locations abroad. Your program staff will also provide you with more details pre-departure and during orientation.

Optional Flight Package

Students can select an optional transportation package for all AIFS programs. Students who choose to book their own flights should meet up with group at the program location and will need to make their own ground transportation arrangements.
