Academics

AIFS Abroad offers a unique global educational experience for students on this program, with the following academic options available:

Known for its excellence in teaching Spanish as a second language, the University of Granada has courses in Spanish language and culture to suit varied levels of expertise. The undergraduate and postgraduate student population totals over 60,000. Small teaching groups are the norm and all professors are native Spaniards. AIFS students will participate in a diverse and dynamic community of students and faculty. The University’s Centro de Lenguas Modernas (CLM) consists of two beautiful historical buildings which have been totally renovated and equipped with modern classrooms, audio- visual equipment, computer facilities and a library.

Earn 3 credits studying the impact of Al-Andalus (Muslim Spain) on Spanish history, tradition and language through a series of classes and visits. You will learn about the most important events of the period and visit the most significant monuments and locations, exploring the concept of Islam while drawing these connections together to understand how the Moors influenced culture, literature, art and architecture. A taster Arabic lesson will give you some essential communication skills before you visit Morocco. Course taught in English.

  • Students will receive their own house key
  • Shared room with another AIFS student
  • Once a week laundry service

History

Before this ancient city was conquered by the Catholic Monarchs in 1492, it was ruled by the Moors, during their nearly 800-year domination of the Iberian Peninsula. Granada has 3 listed UNESCO Heritage Sites: the Alhambra, Generalife Gardens, and the residential district of Albayzín.

Sports

Situated about 18 miles (30km) away from the Sierra Nevada’s, Granada is the perfect spot for a ski getaway in the sun. The Sierra Nevada has snowcapped peaks from November to May and over 250 sunshine days a year.

Geography

Granada’s location is ideal. You can hike the Sierra Nevada in the morning, take a dip in the Mediterranean in the afternoon and enjoy tapas by the light of the Alhambra in the evening.

AIFS in Granada Director, January Term Program

Noelia Marin Muñoz

¡Hola! I have been working with visiting students in Granada since 2007. I studied at the university myself so am very familiar with student life here in Granada. I also spent a year studying abroad in England which gave me an understanding of how to adjust to living in a different culture. My job is to help facilitate your immersion into the Spanish language and culture; ensuring your study abroad is a fun and safe learning experience. I love watching how students change during their time here. Upon arrival, you will continually ask questions. By the end of the program you will be independent, confident and knowledgeable citizens of the world and teaching me things I didn’t know! The AIFS office is located in “Puerta Real”, the very center of Granada. It is a 5-minute walk from the university building. Drop by and tell me about something wonderful you have discovered in my favorite city!

The Program Director provides academic advice, introduces you to the community and handles communication with the University.

Learning does not begin or end in the classroom. To help you get a true understanding of Spanish culture and its Arabic roots, the AIFS team in Granada arranges a variety of cultural and social activities. Activities will include:

  • Guided tour of the Alhambra and Generalife
  • “Tapas” welcome event
  • Tour of the Albaicín (Old Arabic Quarter)
  • Granada of 3 cultures tour
  • Sacramonte

Excursions

This program offers a range of day trips and excursions that will take you outside Granada and deepen your social, historical and cultural understanding of Spain.

Social identity & access
